Purpose Driven Life
Jun. 23rd, 2004 11:23 pmSummary: God created people to form a family who will love him, honor him and reign with him forever. Baptism is important as an outward sign of being part of God’s family.
My thoughts: The paraphrase of James 1:18 is a stretch-- “it was a happy day for God...”??
“Every human being was created by God, but not everyone is a child of God.” No. Just No. If any are to be lost, God will mourn his lost children. At least Warren admits that the invitation is universal.
Warren says we’ll be “assigned positions of service” in eternity-- a common idea, but his references for it are very weak (mostly relying on a parable).
The section on “Benefits of Being In God’s Family” put so much emphasis on heavenly rewards that I found myself thinking “pie in the sky when you die.” There are dangers in too much emphasis on heaven-- being ‘good’ only to ‘get’ something; becoming proud of being included, and judging those you think won’t make it (even gloating over them!).
