Resolution (why wait for January?)
Nov. 21st, 2004 09:54 pmWeather and schedule permitting, I'm going to make time to spend one day a month someplace with more than 3 miles of trails. When weather doesn't permit, I'll at least do one 5-mile day, even if it means *shudder* ten laps at the mall (I can always take a Walkman, or a story to memorize!).
Need to seek out resources to help with this-- what's available within an hour's drive, how do I get trail maps? Look for info on VolksMarch, Rails to Trails, Century Club-- what else?
The bike helped with my wanderlust, a bit-- but then I got sick, and now it's too cold and dry, I'm afraid I'd rip my throat up. Besides, I want forests and meadows and rivers and streams and lakes, not just country roads. After more than 18 months, I'm getting a bit tired of my favorite park. I'm up to walking 3 miles or more now, and that means going over every single trail every day. Even my local nature preserves have only 3 miles of trail each (and in one park, half of the trails are unusable when it's wet).
The nearest place is Warren Dunes, but the trails there are sand, with steep grades-- really tough work! On the other hand, it'd be a great challenge!
