It seems I've been misleading you all... what I've been calling moss are in fact two lovely species of lichens. Their common names are 'pixie trumpets' and 'British soldiers.' The tiny Christmas tree things, though, are moss.
The receding winter floods left behind dozens of these lovely shells.
The squirrels are waking up! I love the colors in his fur; partway between winter and spring coats.
