I pulled to the side of the road yesterday when I saw this redtailed hawk. It didn't let me get close enough for good pics, but it was still cool just to see it. Yes, it has something in its talons, I interrupted snacktime.
The area around the pond is swarming with noisy male blackbirds flashing their bright wings-- trying to draw attention away from their sparrowlike mates, who are now nesting. (I'll try to get a pic of a female soon!)
Looks like a wren-- could be a house wren, winter wren or marsh wren, any of which is a life bird for me if I can figure out which! [after consulting with My Sister the Naturalist, it seems this is a Hermit Thrush... which is indeed a lifer for me!]
I have no idea what this shrub is, nor whether this is a seed cluster, flower or both-- but isn't it gorgeous?
