It really was a fledgling owl.
Apr. 21st, 2005 10:04 pmBut it wasn't a barred owl. It was a baby great horned owl.
I walked past the tree from the other side, and heard rustling. This isn't what I expected to see when I looked back!
I don't think she liked me.
After taking a few pics, I hurried home to get the kidlet, and left phone messages for hubby. Kidlet and I returned to the park, and found both parents in nearby trees. According to my bird books, the female is generally darker and more vividly marked....
.... so this must be the proud papa. Edit: I think those who suggest this is actually another fledgling are right, so we have mama and two fledglings here.
Yes, it was very light outside. The baby doesn't look like it's been out all day, so I'm guessing she somehow fell out of the nest during the afternoon. (Again, the bird books say they sometimes hunt in daylight; maybe mama brought home a snack, and overly enthusiastic baby fell out?) I didn't see any sign that she's injured, so I"m very hopeful that after we left, the adults started encouraging her to try flying. She was moving away from her shelter in by the trees when we left.
