Practice went really well. I'm playing for a Reaffirmation of Wedding Vows ceremony Saturday-- for an incredibly musical family. In fact, I was originally asked to accompany two of the children, and then they asked me to add prelude and postlude. This morning I finally selected music for that-- fits the occasion, and is very comfortable for me.
Hid out in air conditioning for quite a while-- I think we topped 100 here today. Then took the kid to the stable, and headed south for lessons. Today's kids are the ones who hid from their mom last week. The mom and I have been emailing, and prearranged that today she'd leave me alone with each kid to talk (normally they all stay in the room). We've really been wondering if the boy wants to continue piano. Well, when I tried to talk about it I got the usual pre-teen ambiguous grunts, but he really seemed to enjoy his lesson once he got over thinking I was going to yell at him. He seemed particularly interested when I spent some extra time teaching theory, so I'll spent more time on that this summer.
The real surprise was his kid sister. I hadn't realized that she felt so inhibited by big brother when he's in the room! Her playing was much more relaxed than usual, and for the first time she obviously enjoyed the beginning composing exercises we're working on. Then, about five minutes before her lesson ended, mom and brother came in, and I could see and hear her tightening up. So, private lessons for her from now on!
Starting next week all my lessons will be on Tuesday. It'll be nice to make only one trip to South Bend each week! One student is taking a break until August (after softball season) but my first adult student begins next week so I'll still have five lessons.
