I've been dismayed this year at how few herons have been in the area, so I was delighted last night when I saw three greenbacked herons in quick succession. Two flew away, the third perched in front of me for a photo op. Yes, this is a heron-- greens don't extend their necks nearly as much as blues. It's greenbacked because of a relatively small patch of green that, unfortunately, can't be seen unless the neck is extended.
One of the nicest things about walking in the evening is enjoying the sunset.
