Changing scenes

This tree began to slump towards the river channel during a winter thaw in January 2004.



In May 2004 I wrote that I was sure it would fall within a few days because floodwaters had saturated the soil around its roots.



Yesterday it finally fell.

I'm delighted that the floodwaters swept it to the side of the channel; there's a strong flow through the channel, scouring it deep. I've been afraid the channel might fill in, the current through it was so sluggish last year.
