church stuff
May. 21st, 2006 04:08 pmInteresting day, today. We have a "seniors" handbell choir, as in older folks. They have lots of fun, but don't have enough members, so when they perform, a few younger ringers cover the lower bells for them. During first service, I noticed that my friend Lona was covering 6 low bells by herself, so I volunteered to sightread, second service. It went well, and I had a blast-- haven't played in years, and hadn't ever done bells as large as the 3 I handled today (bass clef C, D, D flat). Then I climbed over a pew (because one ringer had knee surgery recently; he was perched on a stool and couldn't move quickly), ran down a flight of stairs, walked briskly up the side aisle and through my robing room, jumped onto the organ bench and began playing the first hymn! I'm really surprised it went well.
I really did play "God Help the Outcasts" for my offertory, and it was very well received. Other music went well, including accompanying the choir. I should get a small amount of pay for my 3 weeks with the choir, which will go into the camera fund. Sadly, it is growing apace; it sounds like I'll have 2 or even 3 funerals in the next week or two. One in particular makes me terribly sad-- one of a pair of spinster sisters. The survivor is going to be shattered.
