Deer! (and, inevitably, a heron)
Sep. 6th, 2006 10:11 pmWhile I was walking tonight, I suddenly remembered that the local paper has a wildlife column. Among other things, it passes on reports of unusual bird sightings-- and sometimes pics. So I emailed about the baby black crowned night heron, with a link to the pic. Minutes later, I got a response, asking for more credit info if they use the pic! I've supplied that, and a higher res version. The column runs Friday-- cross fingers for me! Meanwhile, here's tonight's crop of pics:

For a brief moment I thought this was an adult night-crowned, but no such luck, it's a great blue heron.. still a cool pic, I think.

Incredible photo ops this week-- tonight this is what I saw in a back corner of the park.

At first I wondered if it was a doe and fawn, but no, this is also a baby, just fewer spots.

Look, it flies!

The babies never really did get very frightened; though they moved closer to the woods, this one paused for another look around-- and once I walked past, they came back out to reenter the woods at a different spot (I suspect mama was close by).
