Project 365
Nov. 26th, 2007 08:14 pmOne pic with bonus story.
I'm not sure what inspired the idea, but when my siblings and I were born, my father brought each of us a brass bell for our first Christmas. They were tied onto a strip of bright red cloth, and hung on the doorknob of our front door every year from Thanksgiving to Epiphany in January.
My parents died in consecutive years when I, the baby of the family, was in my mid-thirties. My sister, two brothers and I did amazingly well at dividing up the household goods without arguing. When we came to the Christmas boxes, we set the bells aside while we each chose what we especially wanted. Finally one of the brothers did the only thing we could do-- took scissors and cut that red cloth between each two bells, so we could each take our bell.
The next December, as my husband and daughter and I began to decorate the house, David told me he wanted to give me an early Christmas gift. I knew as he walked in what he had done, because the box made a familiar sound. I opened the box to see a string of brass bells on a shiny red cord, and he helped me add my baby bell before we hung the string on our doorknob.
What does Christmas sound like? To me, it's a string of brass bells.

The oddly shaped bell at the bottom right is my baby bell.
