Well, I'm now among the wheat-free folk, and facing the communion dilemma. I'm lucky, in that my church already offers gluten free wafers, and I have a close enough relationship with my pastor that so far he's remembering me. However, I've already once faced the awkwardness of going to a church where I'm not known. Thankfully they announced that gluten free wafers were available, but it's quite a mood breaker to have to refuse the wheat wafer and speak or gesture to ask for the GF one.

Obviously I'm far from the first person to face this. Has anyone out there come up with a signal, perhaps a different way of holding one's hands, to indicate the need for a GH wafer? Could someone ask on celiac venues for me?

I'm asking around a few places, including among my church-going friends. I'll let you know if/when I hear something. :)

In the meanwhile, I imagine if they announced the presence of the GF wafers, there may be others at the church who encounter the same problem. Would you bet at all comfortable speaking to someone higher-up at the church to see if they already have established something, or alternately if you could inform them that you'll be doing something specific with your hands or wearing something on your clothing to signal them discretely?

I'm asking around and got two questions back: (a) What denomination(s)? (Methodist and/or Lutheran?) and (b) is it a valid communion if you take the wine but not the wafer? (Which isn't what you asked about, but I may as well relay it.)
